Pop the Question: best proposals in films

A few moths ago I was ask to write a couple of post about weddings, so I decide to post the last of this today. Valentine’s day is the day of the year with more wedding proposals and weddings. So I tough it will be a great inspiration for those getting ready to pop the question tonight. Without further ado,  here is my list for the 10 best wedding proposals on films.

10. Gone with the wind (1939)

Directed by Victor Flemming / Written by Margaret Mitchell and Sidney Howard

Rhett Butler propose to Scarlett in a non subtle way just after the funeral of Scarlett’s second husband

9. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Directed by Mike Newell / Written by Richard Curtis

This is the most corny (and still adorable) un-marriage proposal. In a movie that made Hugh Grant the romantic hero he is today.

8. Love actually (2003)

Written and Directed Richard Curtis

Jamie Bennet falls in love with Aurelia, his Portuguese house keeper. So he had to learn Portuguese in order to go to propose to her on Christmas’ eve. In her town he had to pop the question in front of the whole town in a very poor attempt to speak the language just found out she had learn English just in case.

7. Moonstruck (1987)

Loretta Catorini has 2 proposals in this movie, both of them over a meal, both of them with the same ring and both of them with a Cammareni. But the one worth to be in the list is the one made by Ronnny Cammareni at the breakfast table with her family and her ex fiancee looking at them.

 6. Walk the line (2005)

Directed by James Mangold / Written by Johnny Cash, Gil Dennis and James Mangold

When Johnny Cash and June Carter are on stage, he decide to stop the song until she agrees to marry him.

5. The Wedding Singer (1998)

Directeb by Frank Coraci / Written by Tim Herlihy

In this 1980’s nostalgia movie, Julia and Robbie fall in live and break up. When Julia elopes to Vegas to marry another man Robbie chase her and propose in a plane with a little help of  Billy Idol.

4. When Harry met Sally (1989)

Directed by Rob Reiner / Written by Nora Ephron

The proposal of this movie is worth only for a soul mate or a best friend. The proposal on New Year’s Eve (BTW the second day with more proposal in the year) is one of the best proposal scene ever written.

3. Rocky II (1979)

Written and Directed by Sylvester Stalone

In this movie Rocky pops the question to his beloved Adrian on a winter day at the Philadelphia Zoo, and miraculously without the word “Yo”. And of course her answer is equally simple.

2. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Directed by Jim Sharman / Written by Richard O’Brien and Jim Sharman

This is the most original way to ask marriage a song of love about the hero and the heroine in which narrate their story. Dammit Janet! it is one of the best romantic songs in musicals.

1. Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Directed by Joe Wright / Written by Deborah Moggach

This adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel is by far the best, even though is not 100% percent faithful to the book.  But it is of course one of that rare occasions in which the script has enhance the novel. Specially this scene.
