From Film to Stage

I’ve been more than 96 musicals and I love them. And in honor of the 69th Tony Award Ceremony I will list my ten favorite musicals adapted from films.

10. Monty Python’s Spamalot (2005)

Inspired by 1975 classic Monty Pythons and the Holy Grial. The play was created around the songs “Knights of the round table” from Holy Grial and “Always look for the bright side of life” from Life of Brian. The play was written by Eric Idle and John DuPrez. The Play won 3 Tony Awards.

9. Rocky The musical, Fight from the heart (2014)

This musical was written by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens with a book by Thomas Meeham adapted from the screenplay by Sylvestre Stalone. This is by far the most spectacular adaptation of any film, it was made with impressive technology, creativity and beauty. Rocky the musical is a true underdog and really unappreciated. The musical include the two famous songs included in the movie “Eye of the Tiger” ans “Gonna Fly now”

8. The Producers (2001)

Mel Brook’s adaptation of his 1968 film. This play was an overnight success on Broadway, won more Tonys than another play in history, also gave Mel Brooks the “T” of his EGOT.

7. Nine (1982)

Based in the surreal piece 81/2 (1963) by Federico Fellini, the story is semi-autobiographical story of Fellini himself. The play was written by Maury Yeston with a book by Arthur Kopit. The play won five Tonys.

6. Hairspary (2002)

Based in the musical movie “Hairspray” from 1988. This is a borderline kitsch-pop-driven musical written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman with a book by Mark O’Donnell

5. Billy Elliot (2005)

Based on the amazing movie by Stephen Daldry from 2000. The story follows Billy a working class English boy set free by ballet. The play won ten Tony Awards. The musical was written by Elton John and Lee Hall.

4. The Lion King (1997)

This is one of the biggest gambles in Broadway history, and it is a gamble that pay off as one of the most successful plays in history. The beauty of the Disney story took an impressive new dimension with the vision of director Julie Taymor. The play was written by Elton John ans Tim Rice with a book y Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi.

3. Little Shop of Horrors (1982)

The amazing adaptation of a the B movie by Roger Corman. This is a smart, sweet and dark play full with wit and irony, this is an amazing play. The play was written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman

2. Sweet Charity (1966)

This play is the story of every girl that want to make it on Broadway. The play is bases in the movie Nights of Cabiria (1957) by Federico Fellini. It’s a story of a girl who’s trample down but always go for more. The play was written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields with a book by Neil Simon. The vision of this play was created by the amazing Bob Fosse.

1. ONCE (2011)

The amazing adaptation of the 2007 film “Once” by John Carney with music by the actors of the movie Glen Hansard and MArketa Irglova. The play won 8 Tony Award and was dubbed as the most romantic play of Broadway. This a minimalistic play that tell us a realistic and amazing love story.
