Mindfucking films

Some films are made to make us cry, some others to make us laugh and some other are film with the only goal to mess up with your mind (and the character mind too).  According to the Urban dictionary mindfuck is: An idea or concept that shakes one’s previously held beliefs or assumptions about the nature of reality.

The term enter to the films thanks to the 1990’s film of Paul Verhoeven, Total Recall; as a line of one of the character. The term is some kind of new there have been mindfucking films since the beginning. In the mind fucking films is not that movies were you have a final twist that neither the spectator or the character was waiting for; in the mindfucking films you know that something is going on but nobody know what it is.

Here it is my top 10 mind fucking films.

10.  Spellbound (Hitchcock, 1945)

I have to start the list with the master of films himself. Alfred Hitchcock is one of the most important figures of surrealism film in history second maybe to Mr. Bunuel; but Spellbound have the most amazing dream sequence ever created by Salvador Dali. The idea of the movie is simple: A female psychiatrist protects the identity of an amnesia patient accused of murder while attempting to recover his memory; but after Hitchcock play with it  the movie became a master piece.

9. The Exterminating Angel (Bunuel, 1962)

For me this is one of the most mindfucking movies ever. Created by the father of surrealism in film, Luis Bunuel. The idea is a high society diner party and nobody can leave, when the manner are leave behind and the instincts are all that left.

8. A beautiful mind (Ron Howard, 2001)

A mathematician Jon Nash in Ron Howard’s biopic of the schizophrenic Nobel-winning scientist. CIA operative Ed Harris and college-pal Paul Bettany are the tormenting figures who may or may not actually exist.

7.  Vanilla Sky (Crowe, 2001)

A successful publisher finds his life taking a turn for the surreal after a car accident. One of the best Crowe’s movies, a remake of  Alejandro Almenabar’s movie Abre los ojos.

6. The Game (Fincher, 1997)

A neo -noir psychological thriller directed by Davis Fincher, were a wealthy financier Nicholas Van Orton gets a strange birthday present from wayward brother Conrad: a live-action game that consumes his life.

5. Black Swan (Aronofsky, 2010)

A ballet dancer wins the lead in “Swan Lake” and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan, but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like the evil twin sister of the White Swan, the Black Swan.

4. Memento (Nolan, 2000)

A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife.

3.  The science of sleep (Gondry, 2006)

A man entranced by his dreams and imagination is lovestruck with a French woman and feels he can show her his world.

2. Adaptation ( Jonze, 2002)

A lovelorn screenwriter turns to his less talented twin brother for help when his efforts to adapt a non-fiction book go nowhere.

1. Muholland Dr. (Lynch, 2001)

After a car wreck on the winding Mulholland Drive renders a woman amnesic, she and a perky Hollywood-hopeful search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality.
